Парные знаки препинания, употребляемые для выделения названий, прямой речи, цитат и др. Во Франции, Италии и России их обычно применяют остриями наружу, а в Германии – наоборот, остриями внутрь. В России в качестве основных кавычек приняты двойные кавычки-«ёлочки», а в случае необходимости употребить цитату внутри цитаты применяются двойные кавычки-„лапки“. Кавычки начали применяться в России в конце XVIII в. Английское название «ёлочек» Guillemots, возможно, прoизошло от имени французского пуансониста XVI в. Гийома Ле Бе, который их, как предполагается, придумал. Употребление в русском тексте кавычек иностранного типа – серьезная, хотя и распространенная ошибка набора. См. также Кавычки.
